Subaru Driveshaft (Propshaft for Those in UK :))

06/18/2012 8:18 AM

Can anyone direct me to a site that will help me find out the interchangibilty of the rear differential driveshaft on my 2001 Subaru Outback with shafts from other models around the same vintage. The u-joint is going and the parts distributors I have checked say the u-joint is not available and I must go to the dealer/manufacturer and buy a whole shaft. I want to check the salvage yards first and if I find a model close to the one I have will I be able to buy that shaft and have it fit. I would also be open to finding a source for the u-joint so I can simply replace that.

Im sure you could get one at a salvage yard, however, you must consider the U-joint is the weak link in any drivetrain and is the first to wear out. My point being a used shaft might not last long at all before your right back where you started. I suppose you could go to the local or nearest automotive machine shop and have one made, possibly with a more available u-joint. It would depend on what kind of price they give you. I hope that helps.

While I never had to replace a driveshaft on my Subaru, I have done so on several other makes. Around here (southern Wisconsin, USA), the price of an available CV joint from the dealer was roughly 50% HIGHER than the cost of a rebuilt complete driveshaft through an automotive supply house. The CV joint alone had no guarantee whatsoever, though I could get 30 days if I had the dealership do the replacement, more than doubling the out-of-pocket cost. On the other hand, the rebuilt unit came with a lifetime warrantee, and was a lot easier to do, since replacing the CV joint meant the same remove-&-replace steps, PLUS the disassembly of the old CV from the shaft, installing the new one and its boot and bands, lubing, and so on. BOTH CV's would be new, at that point, rather than just one. A no-brainer.

I bought a rebuilt axle, and got a replacement when it began making noise about 85,000 miles later. Unless I can get a used CV for free, I won't bother - it's not worth the effort!

You could post the question on a Subaru owners forum, this is the one I use for my Forester but there must be an Outback version. They are generally very helpful.

In the UK, there are (used to be?) companies that specialise in reconditioning such units....sadly you appear to live in the USA and may have a problem finding such a company. Have you looked?

When searching on Google I found these immediately:-

USA

http://www.hellotrade.com/universal-balancing-usa/product.html

http://www.car-stuff.com/driveshaft.htm

UK

http://www.reco-prop.com/prop.htm

http://www.firowpropshafts.co.uk/

http://www.dandfltd.co.uk/

South Africa was also well represented...

This is just a small example, search where you live also....

The salvage yards have all the interchange information you will require. I do not remember the name of the publication but it is all on line information at this time. If the salvage yard does not have this information then it is because they do not want to spend the money for the system so move on to a bigger and more professional business. You may also get this info on line when you inquire about the parts you want.

In the US, the interchange manual is called the Hollander manual.

Last I knew of the Publication, it was called Hollander Interchange, and it's generally available only at scrapyards, junkyards or breakers as they are called.

Better to get a rebuilt unit, as RON says....

But if you just can't get one at all, get a Hollander Interchange lookup at the local junkyard.... They can cross-reference it to other makes that way....

Well, most of the information was helpful. I appreciate those who took the time to respond. Unfortunately, my situation has changed dramatically. On my way into work this morning I experienced a catastrophic engine failure and the car is now unfeasible to repair. It has nearly 200k miles on it and would cost too much to repair. I will have to look around for another vehicle instead. Thanks to all for your efforts and, again, for taking time to respond. I think I will certainly be making use of the link to the Forester forum since my most likely prospect at this time will be to repair the slightly older car that is in the yard right now waiting on a used engine. It has far fewer other problems than the ill-fated Outback and far fewer miles as well.

Good luck with the Forester. I've had mine for a year now having bought it with 124k miles on it. I've had to do no serious maintenance so far. My son works at a local garage & the software they use to identify common faults on vehicles has nothing listed worth mentioning.

Catastrophic you say....? What happened?

Tell us more about it. I'm sure we could suggest some ways for you to get going again until the other car is fixed or you can outlay the wonga for a replacement vehicle. (...or not)
