Repairing a Storz & Bickel Volcano Vaporizer Heating Unit.

06/20/2012 12:25 AM

Did a search. Found no parts, only a sole repair place in Oakland that only accepts mail-in orders and doesn't answer their phone or respond to email. (I'm ten minutes away). Checked the thermostat contacts, zero ohms. Have full voltage across heater element, which is enclosed in a screen. Can't figure out how to disassemble the heater to check the physical continuity of the heating wire. The air pump works fine.

If the heater element terminals are accessible, measure the ohms. ∞ = open circuit = broken element.

If OP can access the terminals to measure volts across the element then measuring the element's continuity should not be a problem.

Whether or not the voltage measured is correct for the heater or not is another matter...

I see I failed to include the open measurement across the element. My main interest is finding someone who has taken apart the heater element. It's kind of inscrutable.

They don't offer heating unit parts, they only repair in-house....My advice is to buy another one and send yours in to be repaired so you'll have a back-up....

The units now cost close to six hundred dollars. Haven't got it. Used ones are available on Craigslist San Francisco for half that. They have a very long life, apparently.

A halogen lamp makes a fine vaporiser element and its already in a glass envelope.

If your element is rooted then you could attempt a DIY retrofit.

Happy Days.

That's a Very Good Idea. The unit is rated at 120 watts, of which twenty watts is air pump, I suspect, and a hundred watts is heater. When I get the heater ass'y back, I'll see what's possible.

Went to the repair store on 60th and San Pablo, just north of Powell exit on W80. Negotiated a little bit, going to have them fix it, and return the failed part to me. It's a 9/2004 unit, and has been used 4 times a day since then for dispensing medical vapors. That's 4x365x8=11,680 thermal cycles, about fifteen minutes apiece. Not bad for a nichrome wire heater, although I haven't seen it yet. I'll keep ya posted.

Dear ormondotvos, thank You for posting this thread!

Could You please inform how the story ends?

I´m facing similar problem with my Volcano now and the only recovery option here in EU is to send to producer in Germany, it seems.

K check it out! I have successfully opened the volcano and exposed the heating element. Having done that I am now having difficulty finding a replacement.

Please inform when You find one, dear nyantho.

In the meantime I´ve found alternative that is cheaper, but still I plan to send my broken piece to DE for repair.

Those vaporisers are ridiculously expensive IMO.

Pretty darn simple things.
