Stellarium Problems

07/08/2012 9:12 AM

I have Stellarium and have been using it sucessfully for several years at my home in Santo Domingo. It is set up correctly for my location in Santo Domingo and shows the skies precisely.

I just went on a trip to Vancouver BC, Canada. I set up the Stellarium for this new location exactly as I did for Santo Domingo. However it now does not show the skies correctly. I redid it several times and it still doesn´t work. This morning, here in Vancouver, I got up at around 0430AM looking for Venus and Jupiter. The sky, at that time was already clearing up into daytime but I could still see Venus. Stellarium showed the skies as completely dark and this was wrong.

I then moved the red arrow on the location globe of the earth back to the Dominican Republic where it was now daytime and it showed stars and an only very slight morning glow.

I´ve reset the thing about 10 times, checked the time and everything. I´ve gone to the Stellarium users guide and followed there steps a dozen times too. I´m obviously doing something wrong but can´t figure it out and I´m very frustrated.

Any suggestions?

John

Do you have the 'Atmosphere' button depressed? It's the button at the bottom that looks like a cloud! You could always go over to the Astronomy Forum where there are maybe thousands of users of this brilliant program! Good luck and Clear skies.

I don't use Stellarium, I use Starry Nights. But nevertheless, I was wondering if you are sure you have the time zone set correctly. Even though the time zone should be automatically derived from the longitude, there may still be a separate entry required for the time zone.

There is also Daylight Saving Time (DST) vs Standard Time (ST). Does Santa Domingo use DST? BC probably does.
