Voltage Rating Selection for Power Cables for Traction Application

07/09/2012 1:52 AM

Can any one please tell the IEC standard for selection of cable voltage rating for power cables for traction application.

Is 600/1000V voltage rating cable suitable for 415V applications? How is the safety factor for insulation voltage rating decided ? After 600/1000V, next cable rating available for traction power cables is 1800/3000V. Please guide.

Peak voltage = √2 x RMS voltage. √2 x 415 ≈ 587 volts (line to line). Thus 600/1000V cable is fine (600V to earth, 1000V line to line).

600/1000V is right for you.

Insulation class is just one consideration, you also have to consider mechanical properties.

But I am unable to find any IEC standard according to which I can decide the Insulation class. Can you please tell me the relevant standards according to which Insulation class for Traction Cables is decided.

insulation class > operating voltage....

Depending on the environment you may need abrasion resistance , super flexibility, crush resistance, armouring, chemical compatibility...

Any help?

In earlier projects, 1800/3000 V was used for 415 V similar applications. One of the supplier has suggested 600/1000V where as other supplier has advised to use 1800/3000V Cables. So, I'm not able to decide which which option I should go. I need a basis for making a decision. Thats why I was asking for any IEC standard that could help.

Have you asked that second supplier why he is suggesting the 1800/3000V Cable?
