Lightening Arrestor or Voltage Stabilizer

07/12/2012 7:52 AM

At our construction project site, it was identified that main incomer 3 phase supply for all control panels are having voltage fluctuations at several intervals. Resulting to that on the same day, we found our crane control panel wiring damaged. The reason behind this damage is not identified but there was short circuit in 11kV line near the site before damage.

Will voltage stabilizer or UPS supply for all the control panels do good for safe operation of the control panels at the project site. OR do we require to place lightening arrestors/ surge suppressors at the site? (The site is located at very high altitude in the Himalayas). Any help in this regard is highly appreciated. Thank you.

What kind of damage occurred in the control panel?

A major cause of burnt insulation is loose connections where the wire attaches to some distribution point. It may also cause very significant wire oxidation.

Your 3 wire-three phase power will have no ground wire until you transform it from a delta configuration to a wye configuration. Then, if you have significant ground current, it is most likely due to an imbalance.

What is your panel voltage level?

Thanks for ur reply.

The wires were burnt.

There were no loose connections as far as observed.

The panel voltage level is 230V.

Yes, Yes and Yes.

Sorry friend. There is no simple and single solution to power quality at your remote location. Your suspicion on the short on the 11kV line is well iustified. But, so would be nearby lightnings anywhere from the generator to you. Which may be many hundreds of kilometers.

Spikes may be limited in several steps. Spark gaps to limit the most brutal overvoltages. Like 10kV spike on a 220V line. A choke on every phase, to kill high frequency parts of the disturbancy. MOV blocks to absorb, what still gets thru. It is all for spikes that can an will damage electrics and cabling. MOV blocks are Zinc Oxide ceramic bricks that are capable of absorbing spikes frequently present on the power lines. They are replaceable. They are sized to max. voltage: 110V average = 110/0,7 = 157V peak. The MOV I would select is in the range 180-220V, that it would turn on only on really excessive voltages. A fist or two fist size block would protect your equipment. You fabricate your own, I am not aware off the shelf assembly.
