Panel Standardization

07/14/2012 2:37 AM

In India, what should be the "STANDARD" for Electrical Control panels? And what are the conditions to considered, that the panel should be of a particular STANDARD?

A couple considerations based on ISO; any panel longer than 2 ft requires a fan for cooling. Any panel must have 25% of free space.

A standard should be one that can be easily recognized by anyone in the same manner that airplane cockpit instrument panels are laid out; all controls located in the same position so they can be found blindfolded. That is standarization. When push buttons are arbitrarily placed on a panel, the wrong button can be pressed when the operator is not familar with that panel. Standarization is obviously needed in manufacturing and it serves to reduce human error.

If a standard exists for an electrical control panel in India, that standard should be maintained, made available and inspected by the Indian authorities. I expect that power distribution and not control panels have a standard. Since Indian bureaucracy mirrored British bureaucracy, I expect that only licensed individuals with the latest approved copy of a standard can challenge any inspection result.
