Do the two upper pieces in the picture mate and capture the ball?

the lower piece is definitely the stem of a hip replacement, the upper pieces aren't all that clear but i suspect they are the socket pieces for the hip replacement. I suspect that they are black because they were from cremated remains.

Rorschach-

Right on the money. God bless her and she went out with a sense of humor a week ago or so on Friday the 13th after a terrible fight with Cancer...but thats my Mom, quite the character. We miss her but I just had to share. Though not Civil War technology (even though it looks like it) science needs to catch up a bit. This is a full hip replacement set for a human. Yes she was cremated that is why they are blackened (originally Stainless Steel) and they do not run the metal through the bone chipper.

The long one with the ball is pounded and glued into the femur of the leg. The socket top half is pounded and glued into the hip. Then the socket guide fits over the guide pin pointing down and the ball just glides back and forth on the socket surface. tendons hold it all in place.

Hard to believe but this is actually 2001 technology. She had her hips done in 76 wore those out and redone in 01. But she was a hiker.

Love you Mom and thanks for the discussion.

Don't I feel like a heel.

Stedou73ish, please forgive the tasteless comment I made in #6. I had no idea.

Anima eia et animæ omnium fidelium defunctorum per Dei misericordiam requiescant in pace.

May her soul and the souls of all the departed faithful by God's mercy rest in peace

Nothing to forgive Doorman,

My mom would embraced and laughed her Arse off to the comment, as she would agree with you 100% since she had those in her. She was good that way about everything "what a mess these dam doctors know nothing, get me to therapy so I can get back to the cruse ship to get some dancing In".

Hell of a woman and probably the best mom in the world...I know, I know except for your guys' mom's.

Exposing your mother's remains on a blog is seriously self-insulting on it's own so I wouldn't feel all that bad about commenting on it. My first impression on the photo was actually what it ended to be, but I pushed it away saying: It can't possibly be. I guess with some "very advanced" sense of humor -not mine- this is acceptable. And if that made our friend feel any better, by all means, I'll pass. S.M.

I seriously disagree with that statement. It appears the OP had a great relationship with his mother and found this interesting enough to post. I am frankly thankful as i have never seen anything like this and find it fascinating. To the OP thank you for the continued education.

You propubly are far nicer guy than I am but I am not complaining so much -if any- about ethics as about esthetics on this and we must all agree that it's a very subjective issue. Anyway human pain does take mysterious routs to express sometimes. Whatever. S.M.

First off these are not my mothers remains. I would not post the remains.

The crematorium asked if we wanted these as they usually just throw them away since they are not a natural part of the body. I said ok and they came in a separate bag, not with the remains. I found it interesting enough to share. I appreciate your thoughts but your "holier than thou" attitude is not appreciated.

Thank you.

This reminds me of the operation I saw on TV once about 20 years ago. The surgeon was doing a hip implant. I was doing OK while he sawed the old bone off, but when he pulled out the hammer (probably one of the Air Force $6,000 ones) to seat the new piece in the bone, I almost lost it. I doubt they showed potential recipients how physical the surgery was!

the modern ones are titanium and have a foamy titanium coating on the bone interface surfaces that the bone actually grows into to help anchor it. Stainless does not hold up all that well in the human body, the nickel causes an allergic reaction in many people and it is susceptible to chloride stress cracking.

Yes the first ones were Nickel and caused an allergic reaction in the muscle tissue surrounding the socket sets which caused her to get hardened calcium deposits in the thigh muscles, making her walk like Charlie Chaplin.

It might also come in handy for extracting one's foot from one's mouth.

It looks like my hip replacement implant !! Done by LILY-DEPUY and recalled by them... What a nasty situation, eventhough the company will replace it without additional payment.... I prefer to pay them and not to go through this operation again!!
