Is there a way to locate specific post # or thread on CR4?

05/15/2007 7:01 PM

Hi all,

Is there a way to go directly to, for example, post # X on forum Y? Obviously numerical order goes by the wayside when threads begin branching.

For that matter is there a way to go directly to the beginning of a specific thread on a forum other than visually searching through the entire forum?

Sometimes the forums get so convoluted with multiple threads it gets a little difficult to follow.

Thanks,

John

Good question Johnjohn; Ashman here. I think that in light of the fact I m the first and only one yet to respond,,,,,Noone else know either. Myself included. I do know that the cr4 wizards are reading and I am sure they take head of your question. As far as I can see in my opinion what would be some type of three dementional family tree of a query/question or what ever. If that was a dedicated available link that could be with minimal time requirements from cr4 staff, ( maybe some 10 year old out there could do it for science project kicks ), It showed the thread similar to a star on a thre dementional map of the universe and you could graphically see where it leads and how it interconnects with other threads that were procreated from the perverbial butterfly flapping its wing and disturbing the air that cause a frog to miss a bug that ended up stinging or not Adlof that was suposed to have died when he was ten but the butterfly decided to flap because it just did). Ya your questionis a good one! I think despite my long winded theories, that most simple way would be to use what I haven't even explored yet that tag thingy when you post a thread. I some how suspect you won't get many hits on this one too bad. But like I said I'm sure cr4 is listening. A+ comment. The Ashman

You know Johnjohn; I was thinking about what I said and it occured to me that perhaps what we lack is not the ability to trace but the means. By that I mean it is somewhat difficult to learn all of the tricks available to us without pushing ourselves into a discussion that werealy don't want to interfere in. In other words how can you trace something with-out being obtrusive to someelse while we try? So, my thought is this....I will post a disscusion entiled the "theory of nothing" under general... You would be able to just respond to it by something as simple as hi Johnjohn here tag test please repond and learn with us. You know what I mean? In other words there would ultimately be a very large amount of people that would read it and comment thus tagging themselves and all could learn from a discussion that doesn't hurt any one because we would all know it is just there as an learning experiment. All I would ask of you would be the first person to respond and relay in your own words what wehave in mind. Per chance my lingo' differs from your though pattern and everyone would get the idea. I will start that "theory of nothing now', Please respond. The Ashman

Good question, John. I've only one answer and it's for the way to go directly to the beginning of the thread: just press the "Home" key. That will bring you to the top of the thread and the original post. Or did you already know that?

If you've subscribed to the thread and you get a notice, you'll get a list of new replies just below the original post. This list is also available at the bottom of the thread (which you can get to by pressing "End"). To go to a specific post, just click on one of the links.

If you didn't subscribe, you'll have to go through all the posts. Not easy if the post already has 30+ replies. I've become very adept at scanning the replies for one that interests me .

Hehehehehehehe Thanks Vulcan...!!

I've been using computers for 25 years and always forget these shortcuts... That home and end keystrokes work! and are useful....

Now I suppose I should work out what the rest of the keys I never use do!!

John.

One of the keys that I almost never use is the "Insert" key. When you type, the default is for the letters to be inserted wherever the cursor is and the other letters shift over to the right.

When you press it, the new letter replaces the old letters. MS Word calls this overwrite or OVR.

I don't like it. If I want to replace a letter or word, I just type and then delete the unwanted letters. Or I just select the whole word or sentence and then begin typing. The old letters immediately disappear and are automatically replaced by the new ones.

When I'm typing or transcribing something to the computer from a written page, and the Insert key happens to be pressed, I sometimes lose a couple of words inadvertently since I tend to type without looking at the screen.
