How to connect 2-wire transmitter with 2 different PLC

07/28/2012 5:46 AM

A 2-wire pressure transmitter is now connected with Allen bradley Logix L63 series 1756-if8 module. I also require to take 4-20ma of this transmitter to another PLC of S7-200 Siemens make. Kindly guide m.

If you configure the Siemens AI as a "passive" 4-20 mA input, you should be able to simply connect it in series...

If that is not an acceptable option you can also transfer the AI in the Allen Bradley straight to an AO that can again drive the AI on the Siemens (with or without loop isolator in between)

please tell what is passive input & how to configure? How to transfer the AI to AO?

"Passive" input is when the loop is powered by an external source - not by the input card. "Active" input when the Analog input card supplies the loop (typical for 2-wire installations)

To transfer the AI to an AO, simply output the same tag (value that was read by the input) again to an output...

if you do have a "passive" input on the S7 (the S7 AI does not power the loop), you do not need the isolator. But in this case as mentioned earlier you can simply connect the two in series.

Note most Siemens S7 AI modules is configurable - you can change it from "active" (2-wire) to "passive" (3-wire).

sir what i know passive output 4 to 20 mA is when transmitter is giving output by getting power from ai card hence generally all two wire are passive and active is when transmitter is giving output with its own power (may be some power source is available in the transmitter assembly ) . Typically 2 wire transmitter are passive.

Instead of bothering the world with a basic question you should have googled 4-20mA and read some of the technical stuff available.

This is basic knowledge.

Next question: how to configure the port of the Siemens PLC?

GA!

That will work as long as he stays within the common mode range of the input. This implies that both PLC are at the same ground level (same grid) and within a reasonable distance. There might be problems if other instruments are added in the loop.

You can use the 4-20 ma output by current multiplier and so on to numerous systems nothing problem***** kathirasan engineer electrical mtce

You can use a distributor for this.

one analog signal be into the ditributor and you can get two output signals for two dodules.

hi

it is possible but not change the Aux voltage (power supply).in PLC analog i/p current is in series.

otherwise you put isolator

In transmitter (Rose mount) loop connection in our plant i connected series with Display monitor means.

power supply to transmitter series with PLC and Display monitor system.

if it series connection it possible.

If none of the above is practicable, re-transmit the signal going into one PLC to the other using a re-transmit unit. Lee Dickens (usual disclaimer) does a range of solutions for instrumentation hook-up problems.

JPV has hit it right. However if you don't have the AO card and don't want that expense, Precision Digital has several panel meters that have an optional 4-20ma re-transmitter that is definitely cheaper than most AO cards. You can hide the panel meter display or use it as a local display. Be aware that 4-20ma to digital display conversions are best kept to a minimum because you will not get exactly the same reading (referring to the 0.01 place) on multiple displays over entire process ranges.

Add a current-to-current isolator to the transmitter output and connect the two isolator outputs to the PLC inputs. Each current output is loop powered from the 2 PLCs.
