Mining Safety Lamp

05/16/2007 12:42 PM

Many years ago I picked up a mining lamp at a garage sale. They were obviously designed so that they could not be opened in the mine and possibly cause an explosion.

However, I don't know how to open it to fuel it! Is there some special tool or trick that I don't know about? It has it's own internal flint for ignition, but I can't fuel it!.

I worked as aFederal Mine Inspector for twenty five years. The only way to open the lamp is to use a magnet and place it on the two small circles besidet he glass and twist the bottom of the lamp off. When you put it back together do not tighen the bottom on too tight, because it will break the glass when it heats up.
