What Are These 'Purple Flag' Links? Adware?

08/16/2012 12:08 PM

Are these new? Something IHS/GlobalSpec is doing on this site? Or are these pop-up adverts something else, coming from somewhere else? Adware?

What are these 'Purple Flag' links, exactly, and should I be concerned?

I went to reply to a post and got this instead:

I am not happy about this. Not at all happy.

There hasn't been any changes to CR4 yet, the issue is more than likely on your end. We'll look into it for you, but in the meantime, I'd do a quick scan of your computer if I were you, or (in the worst case scenerio) try uninstalling and reinstalling your browser.

If it keeps happening, and only on CR4, let us know and we'll investigate deeper for you

Also links which look like this:

When you hover the mouse over them, in the link-address bar it reads:

http://cr4.globalspec.com/#

but the link itself resolves to:

http://www.internetcorkboard.com/search.php?q=hellfire

In your post, the word 'browser' was similarly highlighted, but it wasn't in the 'Replying to Comment by Mizuti: ...' box above the edit box in CR4's editor.

This time it didn't go to 'PurpleFlag' when I clicked on Reply.

Yes you should be concerned,..... very concerned.

Prelude to an invasion by a country that has a purple flag.

Stay sharp!

In my browser, (IE8) links that appear in my browser history as having been visited appear as purple in my subsequent visits to the refering page. After a week, all the longer I allow my browser to retain history, they return to normal appearance.

However if these links redirect you someplace you didn't want to go (as they aparently do)then I would have to agree with others that your browser may have been compromised.

It doesn't necessarily mean the link is hostile, but I would advise a good active antivirus program that scans links in advance. (AVG is a good freebie if you are interested)

Have a great day!

Taking the O.P. and Post #6 as being indicative of: "PC+CR4site≈perplexity(?)"...

this may be just a bit off-center, but here goes anyway.

I have an Outlook (email) Folder set-up, with a "Rule" that moves all incoming messages from GlobalSpec/CR4 into that folder. Simple. Easy. 'Cut-and-dried'. Understood, how that works.

This morning, I opened the folder to see the new message, and:

. . . the screen / display "shuddered" a couple times, and, "Voila!"

NOW, my Microsoft Outlook has a "new gadget", under the folder_name (CR4)...where I placed the red question mark (?).

The "Search CR4" box is an addition I didn't ask for, nor did I ever click "OK to Install".

It's *NOT* that I don't want it, or don't "like it", or don't "appreciate it", or anything of the sort...! (Really!)

Just makes me wonder.....hmmmmm........

Is *nothing* 'sacred' anymore? Once advertisers get ahold of the ability to "modify" our browsers / email clients, etc. , how long will it be before we can no longer sift through the 'garbage' to get to what we want...? [Deus avertat!]

This is a malware routine that hijacks your machine WEB brouser.

It imbeds in the machine registry and reroutes the communication to the "partnered" companies.

It is the new marketing technique adopted by some companies/sales personnel to generate new business including software for PC protection.

One such agressive routine displays a bogus but official looking warning from the FBI accusing the user of multiple FCC violations and requiring e-payment of a fine ($200-$500) within 72 hours or suffer loss of priveliges, excessive fines, and/or jail time will be involked.

These are malicious and criminal software routines that should cause the perpetrators to be prosecuted to the maximum penalty provided by law but currently are not due to the low dollar amount. (less than $500 => petty crime/misdemeanor)

The fix:

Access the internet through a non-infected machine, access malwarebytes.org, hijackthis, or other reputable anti-malware site and download their free patch onto a flash drive/stick, disconnect the infected machine from the internet, boot up in SAFE MODE, and upload the fix into the infected machine then follow the directions.

or

Contact a reputable local computer technical service and have them perform the cleanup.

If you chose to use an internet technical service do not be surprised to find out you are routed to the very group that loaded the hijacking routine on your machine and the charge for the "fix" is $200 -$500. (Coincidental? Same amount as bogus FBU fine above.)

BE CAREFUL: There are a few of these hijacking routines that actually delete your critical OS files and personal documents shutting the machine down if you do not pay the "fine" and/or purchase their "protection" software and keep the subscription up to date.

To me this is extreme criminal as it can cause severe economic losses to individuals as well as businesses and this should be prosecuted at the highest punitive level.

Death is so, so final. How's about being hogtied instead and forced to listen to Rush Limbaugh non-stop for two weeks straight? The CIA/FBI/NSA have found this much more effective than waterboarding at a secret Yemeni prison.

It came up with nothing. However, I black-listed the sites the browser goes to and the problem has gone away.

CR4's site today was a different matter altogether. It is working better now, but still is very slow when accessing PMs, and still shows javascript:void(0) when I hover over, say, the Preview Comment button on this editor. The button works, however. Earlier I had to click multiple times. I'm not having these problems on any other site. Others are having problems here, too, so I suspect there's work being done on CR4's servers.

You've probably scoped it, but related (well, I reckon it is) comment is here.

There seem to be several glitches going on. None chatastrophic (as far as I'm bothered), though I see it as for the better that europium has raised the topic(s).

Unless I put a coathanger in your mouth, you'll never manage the perfect French scowl.
