Harder Than Anything!?

08/20/2012 1:24 AM

Just found this:

http://phys.org/news153658987.html

Looks like this can change a wide field of industries. Imagine how the jewellers will jump on this one!

I think the Metal Industry might be interested too.

What else do you think?

They "calculated" the hardness rather than measured it?

(Well, maybe so. ) (Girl's best friend, and all that....)

They finally found a stone that is as hard as my x-wife's heart?

Imagine how the jewellers will jump on this one!

Scientists have known about this for years but "Wurtzite boron nitride" just doesn't have the marketing appeal of "Diamond".

Jack - Give the gift of Wurtzite boron nitride this Valentines day.

Not as a "Gem" stone as such but to work Diamonds - was more along the lines I thought it would go. But cheers there might still be room for thought if we ever get one as big as 15 karat or so.

Wonder what the color is of Wurtzity BN?

Probably comes in many colours, all of which look like cheap plastic.

A consumer product marketer's worst nightmare.

One day they'll find an asteroid full of it, and cleverly rename it "asteroid-name-ite".

Then the smugglers will pass it off as cheap plastic.

I'm wondering if they could somehow 3-D print them?

Could these be used to create bearings/races that last under high use and heavy load? What kind of lubricant would be suitable?

Sometime more than 25 years ago, when I was a "Scientific Manager" for Uncle Sam, a West Coast company was making crystaline BN and trying to interest the US government in it, mostly for electronics and heat conductivity, but also for cutting tools, etc. Uncle Sam wasn't interested, and the company sold the platinum crucibles they had used, closing down the program.

Is this indentation strength from all direction?

It could be that the structure of hexagonal diamond distribute its strength into the other side greater than the other.
