Possibilities:

  • Too much load current for it given the ambient conditions in which it is operating
  • Shorted turn inside the equipment; insulation breakdown
  • Foreign object embedded in the equipment
  • Reverse power from somewhere else on the distribution network
  • Lack of synchronisation with elsewhere on the distribution network
  • Rainwater ingress
  • Other

Caused by any of these possibilities:

  • Incorrect setting of overcurrent protection device(s)
  • Incorrect operation of prime mover
  • Inadequate maintenance
  • Inadequate control protection device settings
  • Momentary overload
  • Failure to synchronise before connection to the load network
  • Loose cable connections at terminals
  • Other

I agree with Mr Slacks Comments. I would tend to opt for you have simply over run the set. If your pF is out by just a little you quickly exceed the alternator rating. Exactly how would your generator cope with starting a motor where the starting current might be 6 to 8 times. Have you considered the affects of harmonics.

Smoke represents the maximum probability of winding insulation failure due to weak insulation in winding turns.

Maximum possibility is moisture content, leaky winding, & ultimately failed.
