Centrifugal Chiller

08/23/2012 10:44 AM

I have about 25 year old trane centrifugal chiller. It has a new water tower and condencer tubes have been cleaned and keeps a condencer temp at 84. the chiller is now running at full amps and can not keep the water under 50 digrees. it has a 6.75 approach. It is also fully loaded as it is doing this. Any suggestions?

  • Maybe it has had additional equipment added to the circuit in the last 25 years and is undersized.
  • Maybe the outside air humidity is so high that the cooling tower is currently undersized.

How well does it work in the winter?

Good in winter. Its the towers first summer but there is another chiller and it works fine. Keeps 44 digrees. I'm thinking low on refrigarent. Or on its last leg. Any tips or tricks to keep it alive?

You didn't give units for temp., I think it is deg F. Just compare its all parameters like compressor suction and discharge pressures and temperatures, water flow rate to evaporator and condenser with the chiller running fine. you may yourself get the answer. Or else, give those figures here.

So you have a chiller with a water-cooled condenser chilling a water loop, correct? Is the 84degF the water temp leaving the tower or the actual refrigerant condensing temp?

The following info would be useful: Tower water temp entering condenser, tower water temp leaving condenser, tower water flow rate, chilled water temp entering evaporator, chilled water temp leaving evaporator, chilled water flow rate, condenser refrigerant presure, evaporator refrigerant pressure, chiller rated capacity and conditions, refrigerant used

Also, what is the wet bulb temperature? (Or location.)

From your symptoms, an overcharge of refrigerant seems more likely than an undercharge.

What sort of advice came from the chiller manufacturer in response to the telephone call to their technical helpline?
