If the conductor fails during a lightning strike event, is it better for the explosion to happen inside the building or outside <rhetorical question - NNTR>?

What do you mean by shaft? Are you referring to metal conduit?

dependable lightening earthing involves directing the high voltage through a good conductor that is the shortest path to a good ground and away from people and equipment. high voltage from a lightening strike will aways take the path of least resistance. the voltage involved is capable of jumping from a ground to a better ground.
