Chilled water quality

08/30/2012 4:31 AM

We use soft water (Hardness < 5 ppm) for our closed loop chilled water system with soft water make-up facility and Chemical Nalco R-39 M.

We just change the water 45 days ago but suddenly today we find TDS: 450 PPM, pH: 8.81 & Hardness: 17 PPM. Is it good enough or we need to take any precaution?

I try in the Google for any reference for closed loop chilled water system but did not get any authentic papers! So, if any body help me to find any reference.

Then the answer is that it depends upon the quality of the heat exchange surfaces that the water is being used to cool and upon the temperatures it is being used to reduce. Maintain the chemical dosing regime and involve Nalco with the data over time.

it could be caused by galvanic current from two dis-simular metals that's causing one to errode.

ground all dis-simular metals near all the joints.

you might need to add sacrificial metal to the ground wires.

good luck

Assuming you don't have a leak into the closed loop, have you checked the operation of the upstream water softener facility? As others mentioned, you can foul your heat exchange surfaces if you aren't careful but this is dependent on the water chemistry and not a normal standard. Higher pH will tend to encourage precipitation of calcium won't it?

We have no confusion with the soft water quality or chemical dosing. Hardness & TDS increase may be due to the pipe corrosion. We are planning for chemical cleaning of the hole system then refilling of the total system.

What we are urgently looking for closed loop chilled water quality standard (like ASHRE, ASME etc) that we can plan for it and incorporate it in our SOP.

We are using HITACH & Trane air cooled chillers, and HE material is SS, So we need to take steps ASAP.

Thanks all of you
