Water Solubility

Sir,

can the free water (water settled at the bottom of tank) in jet A1 fuel tank dissolve into fuel, if the fuel temperature rises to higher degree? Ex. i've fuel saturated with water (above fuel surface 100% RH moist air is there) and only increasing the temperature of fuel and adding some free water into the tank. is the free water will dissolve into fuel or remain as free water at bottom?

Left alone, it won't mix. Heated, or agitated, it might.

Filter the fuel before use.

If it is injected into a jet engine along with the fuel it will turn to steam and be ejected from the engine in the exhaust gases. However, supply a jet engine with 100% water instead of fuel, and the consequences could be serious, including loss of altitude from flame-out.

Filtration won't separate a liquid from a liquid.

Agitation won't mix two immiscible liquids.

It is a pet "fix" for a water problem in a petrol tank, to add the contents of a bottle of methylated spirits to the tank and thoroughly mix.

What to do on an aircraft is a completely different matter, though no doubt there will be existing procedures to cover it. How about a telephone call to the fuel supplier to discuss the magnitude and location of the problem, and obtain some recommendations?

OK use a filter/seperator Aviation & Hydrocarbon | Fuel-Water Separator Filters, Fuel Monitors
