It has always been copper. This is the best metal for conductivity.

Aluminum is a better conductor than copper, but slip rings are subject to extreme wear and are therefore typically made of bronze.

Aluminium wire has 61% of the conductivity of copper wire. So... how can you say it is a better conductor than copper? Unless you are talking about the metal itself and not when drawn into wire format?
