Porosity Specification For Aluminium Die Castings

09/19/2012 7:22 AM

We are producing aircraft seats. The legs of these seats are aliminium die castings. We need a specification for determining the acceptable level of porosity both inside and on the surface.

That information would come from either the prospective purchaser, or a published aviation standard, or possibly both.

How can you produce a product without any controlling specification?

It would be covered by the Federal Aviation Regulations found in the Code of Federal Regulations.

You will have to discover which one controls your specific item.

I am asking for the name of the specification, we are in the design stage. There has not been any production yet.

thanks

"Companies that produce aluminum engineered products and structural components should specify anything from a level 1 to a level 4, depending on actual design requirements. Aluminum castings will not generally meet ASTM mechanical property minimums with porosity severity levels greater than a grade 3. A good rule of thumb is for a designer to specify grade 3 if the desire is to meet ASTM property limits for design. This provides a good compromise on cost and performance. "

Probably in here someplace....

Generally porosity on the outside of the casting are evaluated by visual inspection, not radiography.

http://www.diecasting.org/default.php or publications@diecasting.org

The above threads are for the North American Die Casting Association. Suggest you buy a copy of the NADCA Product Specification Standards for Die Castings NADCA Publication #402. Section 7 covers Quality Assurance and sub-section 7 covers Porosity. Should not over specify requirements. Die castings are by nature somewhat porous.

If an Aerospace Standard is required see SAE website for AMS Standards on Aerospace. Something like a seat leg is probably not covered since it doesn't really affect the airplane's overall safety or flight control.

Refer to MIL-HDBK-5H and to MIL-A-21180.

Mil-A-21180 was superceded by AMS-A-21180 and that has been made "Noncurrent" thus obsolete. In either case die castings were not covered. Those standards covered "High Strength Aluminum Alloy Castings" and all the alloys and heat treatments were for Sand Castings not Die Castings.

Did you mean MIL-HDBK-55, Radiographic NDT Handbook, superceded by MIL-HDBK-728 rather than MIL-HDBK-5H?

A better source would be ASTM E505 reference x-rays for Die Castings and ASTM B85/85M Standard Specification for Aluminum Alloy Die Castings.

Seems to me we had a similar discussion on this topic some months ago. You might try a search of the CR-4 files and see what was said at that time.
