Exclude the ones that don't need to be leak-tested.

Check with the applicable standards. If it's water system process piping, check the AWWA (or similar) standards. If it's petroleum processing, I believe the API standards apply. Etc etc etc

wadid.....

It has been my experience dealing with ASME B31.1 and B31.3 power and process chemical lines, that most valves are included in the hydrotest program.....and most of the testing done on these valves is in the open position.

The only type of valve that should be excluded from piping system hydrotesting are safety and relief valves. The flanged connection should be blanked off.

Rupture disks, of course, should not be included in the test.

It is important to point out that many valves CANNOT form part of the hydrotest boundary if they are to be used in the CLOSED POSITION ! (i.e. pressure on one side of the valve) This is a common newbie mistake !

The same valve can be safely hydotested if open.

Consult the valve manufacturer's specifications for more information.
