Another Classic What-If - What If a Rainstorm Had One Single Drop of Water

09/20/2012 11:25 AM

If we don't discuss the consequences, who will?

That's not rhetorical, and in fact, the discussion has been started here.

Ready, go!

The defnition of the word storm should be altered

How would you know it was rain? With birds and planes over head!

That award should go to the originator of the preceeding question on this site.

"If you went outside and lay down on your back with your mouth open, how long would you have to wait until a bird pooped in it?"

It's a contradiction in terms. A single drop doesn't make a storm.

For me it comes down to, "What changes would we have to make to make this possible". Would the water evaporate in one big drop? If one drop, say it is worth a 1" rainfall over a square mile, does it fall over the same area or as a column, say 1' square.

I prefer the scientifically ridiculous but interesting tales such as Lord of the Rings and Star Wars to the scientifically ridiculous "What Ifs".

The units on the mass are wrong - 600 billion kilograms, not 600 billion tons - and the drop doesn't have the same mass as the human race (485 billion kilograms, about the same as the combined mass of the world's ants), it has more, but everything else looks good as far as that goes.

And just exactly how big would that one drop be, anyway?...

You mean if a rainstorm dropped all of its water in a single giant drop?I can't imagine...It's horrible!Perhaps the huge raindrops can easily drown a large group of people...
