Is it Time Yet to Add a SPACE Section to CR4?

10/02/2012 7:13 PM

At risk of frustrating a couple of our veteran members, I'm going to go ahead and once more pose the question Is it Time to Add a "SPACE" Section to CR4? I unsuccessfully lobbied for this a couple years ago, to no avail. But with the recent uptick in fascinating space projects that are hitting the news (Virgin Galactic Spaceport, a spaceboat to explore Titan, civilian launch vehicles, Voyager leaving solar system, the many incredible discoveries happening on Mars as we speak, Indian space program, asteroid mining, Spaceship 1, etc.) perhaps it's time to get our members opinions once again.

I did a search for the word "space" on CR4. The results came up all over the map, as far as what CR4 Section those questions were in. Highest percentage was "General", but they were also found in Mechanical, Communications, and New Technologies, etc.

There are certainly plenty of discussions and questions dealing with space. Everything from Astrophysics to space shuttles to alien life, and even Aeronautics and Science Fiction literature. Might be nice to have it all in one place; for the same reason that Software or Sustainable Engineering is in one place.

So I'll ask once again... What do you all think? Would we benefit from a "Space" Section on CR4? I've got a feeling that it would be more populated with questions than several of our lesser used current Sections.

"SPACE"... I'm a fan!

lyn & Doorman... I'll put you down for a "nay"

Well,

As much of a surprise as it may be, I'll say that I have no objections at all. My fingerprints are on many pieces of hardware that went into outer space and earth orbit.

Decisions such as this are at the discretion of admin. As I've ALWAYS said, it's their gig.

I'll be there if it opens.

I hope your fingerprints are not truly on anything which went into space since equipment being launched into space is required to be manufactured in a clean room environment. (I'm sure you were just using a figure of speech).

Yes, it was a figure of speech.

But, some of the guys I worked with were mechanical designers and they made the art work for chem etching small thin covers for the individual electronic module cavities. They had their names etched into the inside of some of those covers.

This has always been a highly-requested section and it's something that many of the admins would like to add. The way CR4 is structured, adding a section requires programming, which is one reason why it hasn't happened yet.

It's possible that there may be some resources to improve CR4 next year. If approved, you may see your new section mid-2013.

Mid-2013? But... but... everything in space will already be discovered by then!

But, I'll still give that a GA!

Well, we'll just put SPACE on hold then............And while we're at it. We might as well put TIME on hold also.

But I'm letting you know right now, Einstein may not have approved of this.

Re: Is it Time Yet to Add a SPACE Section to CR4?

As an apparent surprise to OOBE, I'm with the majority so far; I have absolutely no doubt that a CR4 section dedicated to the exploration of the space beyond Earth's atmosphere would be a busy section.

I also agree with lyn that we members are guests here at CR4, and whatever the hosts choose to serve for dinner I will happily consume. I would say that I don't really have any trouble following a discussion about space exploration if it is contained within the automotive section... doesn't really matter to me, I read every thread.

That said, I would agree it is likely that those discussions would probably get more attention if grouped together in a dedicated section.

[edit] As an aside, I see a new section is being constructed as this is written...

Doorman, I singled out you and lyn as probably opposing it only because the two of you were pretty solidly against it last time I suggested it. I'm very glad you've both changed your minds. Admin isn't going to consider a change like that unless support is strong among the members. So every bit of support helps.

Well, let me ask the first question. In Mars they have found dried bed of an stream and in our earth too there are dried lake/river beds. From these can you guess after how many thousand years our earth will become another Mars-like planet.

While you're on this subject, how's a bout changing "What is it" to "Who can identify this before Solar Eagle"?
