Motor Winding With Al Magnet Wire

10/04/2012 8:04 AM

Hello,

This motor stator is different it used Al magnet wire coated with golden color insulation as cu magnet wire, now we have only cu wire in stock how to convert this to cu magnet wire? some says the Al wire is only 5/8 compared to cu wire.

Here is the motor data: 3 phase Induction motor.

HP=1, Volt=460V, Hz=60Hz, Rpm=1740

Winding data :

No. of slots= 36 , Coils group= 6 , coils per group = 3 , coil pitch = 1-8, 1-10. 1-12

No. of turns = 164, 165, 166, wire size = 0.80mm diam. al magnet wire.,

I calculate to use 0.50mm diam. cu wire is it okay?

thank's

I suspect the 5/8 ratio applies to cross-sectional area rather than diameter.

Use Cu wire of the same diameter and use the same number of turns. The motor will be just a little more efficient than it was.

I recalculate the 5/8 of 0.80mm diam. Al wire cross-sectional area is equal to 0.6324mm diam. cu wire cross-sectional area, so I decide to use 0.80mm cu wire and try the same no. of turn as original Al magnet wire.

Thank you,

How about using the diameter of copper that has the same resistance as the original aluminum, and the same number of turns? (I'm not a motor rewinder, so this may be a guess.) There may also be a question of equal filling of the slots, which could be accommodated by varnish thickness.

The equivalent of 0.80mm diam is 0.635mm diam. so definitely with the same no. of turns as original wire the filling (total filling area) is lesser than the original.

Maybe it should be okay because the result are the same resistance. But how about the magnetic flux?

Are those two equivalent on the basis of ampacity, or resistance? Be sure of which (unless by coincidence it is both).

I refer from the magnet wire table they are almost the same resistance in ohms/1000ft. but i'm not sure with the ampacities of both wires.

Like johny says, use the same diameter in copper wire and the same number of turns.

Efficiency will be better and the starting torque will be higher, (start current will also increase, but for a small motor (1 HP) this is no problem)
