Why the Extra Digits?

10/05/2012 8:53 AM

Got a phone call yesterday and the number calling me had 2 more digits than is normal for a US phone number. (12 rather than 10) Google is no help on this, unless it is from a similar 10 digit number with 2 tacked on in the caller id function. Usually if I Google a call from a telemarketer it is quickly identified as such. This one draws a blank when the last 2 digits are added, but gives me access to phone id lists (for a cost) when the last 2 are not added. (could be the first 10 digits are a legitimate phone number) I tried a search on this site, but am not sure how to word the query to see if this has been discussed before. (no - I am not going to try a re-dial on this number)

I assume this is a telemarketer trick. So how do the last 2 digits get added on the caller id screen of my phone?

Perhaps the two digits were a country code? What were they (if you don't mind my asking)?

441903219000

441-903-2190 is a legitimate US phone number, but I am not paying $30 to find out who it is.

The extra 3 or 4 digits are probably added to the end and designating an individual within the organization...

This sounds like the beginning of a bad abduction thriller starring Bruce Campbell.

No offense Bruce, I love your work. Particularly the Army of Darkness.

That's a number from Worthing in the UK.

44 is the international dialling code for the UK; 01903 is the internal dialling code for Worthing. You miss out the first 0 of the internal number when dialling in from elsewhere.

That's swell - I know no-one in the UK in Worthington, nor have I had any company contacts from any businesses there. Are telemarketers calling from foreign sites using foreign numbers now? (Has to be expensive doesn't it?) Wrong number???

Maybe I do try to call back this number.

I think they dailed the wrong number.

Damn kids, Stop playing with the phone, wait till their parents get the phone bill.

Once you get the name right (I tried Worthington first, not Worthing) you find that here is a business in Worthing that I contacted at a US address. Business that makes labels and label makers.

Thank you much for the direction.

And I thought it was a telemarketer with a new angle....

Phone scam out of Bermuda. They tell you you're a winner, and have you punch in a code to claim your prize. Your next phone bill is in the thousands.

You can report it here:
