Voltage Between Terminal to Earth When That Particular Terminals Gets Earthed

10/10/2012 4:39 PM

Dear frnds, When Supply terminals (Say DC) gets grounded(suppose positive terminal).what will be the voltgae between earth to positive terminal, and what will be between earth and negative terminal.please provide explanation. If possible explain in AC system too.

What's the voltage on the terminal?

Is this your homework again?

Most likely 0V as shorting the output of a DC power supply results in the protection operating or the DC power source overloading and blowing up, or going into current limit (in which case who knows what the output voltage will drop to). The same goes for an AC system.

If the DC power supply is electrically isolated from ground then the power supply wont blow up if you short the positive to ground, however because it is isolated you also wont measure any voltage between the Dc negative and ground, so again the answer is 0V. The same goes for an AC system.

Near zero, depending on the resistance of the path to ground. (Called ground fault.)

If the opposite pole (DC) or another phase (AC) is also grounded, there will be a short circuit.
