How to Select the PMG for the Synchronous Generator ?

What is difference between PMG 3 phase and 1 phase used for the AC synchronous generator ? For my generator rating is 40 MVA 11 KV. How to select it ?

Usually the generator manufacturer selects the PMG (Permanent Magnet Generator) as part of the excitation system/generator package. Why would you want to second guess the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) who knows the overall system best?
