Audio amplifier transient testing

05/21/2007 2:48 AM

I have a design where the audio amplifier is connected to an output terminal through an 470uF cap. The terminal is then connected to an 8 ohm speaker. I want to subject this circuit to 2.4KV 50 microseconds fast transient as is the requirement. But I could not arrive to a scheme which would withstand the transient.

Thanks,

Dileep

Try adding a MOV (metal oxide varistor) or similar across the input terminals where you are injecting the transient. Just make sure the MOV breakdown voltage is higher than the expected normal peak voltage or you will also suppress that too. Alternatives are the trusty back-to-back zener shunt (which thinking about it probably a better idea for this circuit).

Depending on your results you may also want to try a semiconductor device such that is intended for transient suppression. They are essentially two zener diodes back to back (for AC) and they are much much faster than MOV's which are actually very slow and may not always provide adequate protection.

That comes out to about the time period of a 20 KC wave.

Is this a transverse or common mode test?

Or perhaps the IEEE test, any terminal to any other terminal or to ground (case) ?

If the one cycle 20 KC signal is out band signal to the audio amp, then small inductors and Caps should filter it with out degrading the audio amplifier performance. A .01 Mfd shunting capacitor by-passing the 470 MFD coupling capacitor, and a couple of beads should do it.

Is this a no damage test or a must continue to operate during the test?

I wonder what audio amplifier you are building?

too higher voltage apply across it? I hvnt heard of it.

but I guess you are wanting to make a certain qualify certification so you need this high voltage endurance measurijng.

its another question.

is my guess right?

is it incredible? three threads post in very same sencond!

dont do the test if you dont make a clear.

it may insulate test.

can that limited by resistor + spark gap pr xenon - flash -bulbs ?

If they are fast enought , this can work
