Conversion from USB to serial port

I use a dongle (a small hardware device ) that connects to the 25 pin serial port of my laptop. The dongle authenticates the use of proprietary software.

Now I have bought a new laptop that does not have the 25 pin serial port. It has the 13 pin serial port for VGA and USB ports. I tried using a 'converter' (one end a USB and the other end a 25 pin connector) and hooked the dongle to it. It did not work.Nor did it work on a 13 pin to 25 pin converter.

Any ideas on how to make it work?

Hi Ash,

I ran into the same problem. I didn't use a dongle, but my PLC communication cable was serial. I ended up getting a PCMCIA card with 2 serial inputs and it works fine. I got it on the internet - I don't remember where right now. You can probably do a search and find one.

you may be able to use one of those USB to serial converters or ask the vendor to trade your old dongle for a USB type.

all the new ones are USB
