Ozone Generators Zap Tainted Vegetables

05/21/2007 8:31 AM

Recently, highly-publicized food scares have researchers shaking their heads in a search for better food safety equipment. From spinach scares and tainted peanut butter, to bad tacos and contaminated pet food, food sanitation is a top priority. Read how one man is hoping that his "activated oxygen" device can wipe out harmful bacterium in fruits and vegetables.

It's an interesting (and plausable) idea for some foods, but I wonder how the plant material itself takes to being oxidized.

I would think that there could be all sorts of treatments that would work well with all sorts of materials, but I wonder about the expense.

This sound really very dodgy Ozone is so very reactive and also toxic, I would not bother to invest in this for now if ever. Just see what happens with tacos. The oil remaining in them could well lead to a conflagration. (Nasty fire.)

Sure, ozone is an extremely powerful disinfectant, but wouldn't it also oxidize and destroy the food as well? After all, oxygen is responsible for a lot of food spoilage such as the browning of cut apples, and ozone is essentially oxygen on steroids. Might it not also destroy nutrients such as proteins and vitamins?

Ozone (Wikypedia) is 100% effective in water, clean room and inert means, in organic means Ozone is reactive and toxic for the oxidation, and very toxic until one evaporates, and the biological means are withered.

The powerful nature of gamma rays (Wikypedia) has made them useful in the sterilization of medical equipment by killing bacteria. They are also used to kill bacteria and insects in foodstuffs, particularly meat, marshmallows, pies, eggs, and vegetables, to maintain freshness.

Hi Grage

While idea of gamma rays sounds much better, it requires a huge plant for it. Ozone one tries at home like a amateur and one is seriously taking lots of risk. Ozone affects only surface and some depth in water as it is produced by UV and not by ionization in water. Air ionization causes lot more dispersed Ozone which may leak very easily and reach where you stand breathing ionized air.

Remember that Ozone is real danger and is not something to be taken lightly. It may not affect if you just walk for few seconds in high ozone area but being there for an hour sure is something towards permanent damage.

Buy food items that are gamma irradiated if you have to store them else buy un-irradiated fresh items and finish them fast.

While Ozone and Chlorine are helping in fighting bacterial infections, they are harmful in many ways. Hence, play safe and know the safety procedure like the way scientists and engineers use the book at their work place. You are making your home a work place so there is hardly any difference.

Take care and don't get scared of using Ozone or Chlorine. Just know the ways to safe use. Those payed with x-rays and radioactivity in early times died due to radiation injuries and cancer. Watch out if this is also going to be genetic disorder and do not pass it to your newly born child.

Hi Shyam

The main article does not mention that he is of at home, are hundreds of tons those that present this problem, and the Gamma radiation disinfects externally and internally.

For use domestic servant you can wash to the fruits and vegetables with drops of diluted chlorine and soon to rinse well and are sufficient.

The use of ozone is previous to the packing of the product and is single superficial and exists the probability that you deteriorate the presentation of him, if this it contains high mineral levels, personally it would not recommend the ozone use in biological products.

Hi Grage

I agree that for large requirement, the gamma treatment works well. India took many years to approve this and it was done only when food for sub marine engineers could not last six months under water. We had this knowledge for over 40 plus years and was not utilized due to radiation fear to unknown happening.

Radiation effectively kills germs but also breaks some proteins and forms chain links in other. It also generates a lots of radicals of water and other organic matter. Much of this remains as harmless matter and leaves food in better taste and fresh look. We are not fully aware if any serious disorder may come from radiation damage. There is always a probability and the number should be fairly small for the risk factor to be considered serious one at all. Radiation some how generates greater fear in minds of less educated in this area.

Many insect larvae go deep in the fruit and can survive their for months. So are many other germs. Killing by gamma radiation due to deep penetration energy is very effective and much better than any surface treatment. Radiation can be given in packed condition and hence there is no need to open and touch the food item by hands to further contaminate it. I think this is a very good way to handle food items.

In India we have only few such plants and almost all of them are government operated for export. Local people use only cold storage where most of the food items undergo some damage in time.

Hi Shyam

I am agreement with you, Gamma radiation from fear is not used, I do not know much on radiation, and in Peru this was promoted at some time, would be good for placing an article to see the experience of others.

As a mom of three growing children I found that when I would buy produce before we could consume it the produce would go bad. That doesn't surprise me seeing as how everything goes bad before you can eat it nowadays. Even if I would juice the produce it did not taste as fresh as the day I brought it home. I researched the reason and found that there is device that works in your refrigerator that will help prolong the shelf life of organic produce by using activated oxygen, plus it kills bacteria. It is the best thing I have ever owned and I think everyone should own one. I found it at www.orderminimate.com. It's called the Mini Mate. I have had mine for over 60 days and it has already saved me $20.00 which is a fraction of what I paid for it. Has anyone else ever used this before?
