74C02 replacement

05/21/2007 1:05 PM

Hello all, new to CR4! I'm sustaining design on an old controller, and I'm struggling to find a replacement for the 74C02 quad 2-in NOR.......the biggest issue is that I need the replacement to handle inputs that are pulled up to 15V! The closest I've found so far is a 4011, but the pinouts are wrong.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Matt

This part is available try Google and look at listings. There may be min qty issues or the price could be a little steep but they can be had.

Oh it's definitely out there, but I need a more cost effective, permanent solution to show my boss....

Ok what spec can you work with I presume it has to be direct drop in type. Does it use a socket? Do you know why it failed? Can you use a more modern equivilant?

Right now we're using a socket - I've been looking around and I think the CD4000 series is my best bet. It's got a few pins that aren't matched, but it's $0.50 and can handle similar voltages.....I'm sure I can make an adapter for less than $16.50!

Thanks guys(gals?) I'll slog it out from here.

If you can justify the cost to do so, and space permits, you can get a pin-out converter. It is simply a small circuit board that translates the footprint from the 74C02 to the 4011. If space is a problem you could consider getting a panel made up of small boards that would accept a surface mount 4011 and pin it out to the 'C02 pattern.

The 4011 is a NAND, 4001 is closer to the 02, reversing pins 1 & 3 and 11 & 13 make the 4001 like the 74C02, but the fan in and fan out characteristics are different, 74 line is more for interfacing with other chips of this family where the 4xxx series is not.

May or may not work, depends on other circuit elements, running into this all the time where ten year old IC's are now obsolete, can find them, but a fortune, can't recall the number off the top of my head, but a 23 cent power supply IC twelve years ago is now $230.00! Found a piece of junk equipment on ebay that I knew was using this IC, got it for ten bucks and prayed that IC was good, it was.

Don't use the 4011; it's a nand gate chip. Use a 4001. I'm thinking of trying a wire wrap socket under the 4001 chip, bending/twisting the long leads to change the layout. Pins 1 & 3 need to be reversed, as do pins 11 & 13. I'll put some shrink wrap around the leads so they don't touch and short to other leads.
