Hurricane Sandy - Aftermath - Messages of Support

10/31/2012 4:58 AM

Now that Hurricane Sandy is moving away the aftermath of the storm that hit the heavily-populated eastern coast of North America can start to be addressed, both in technical and in human terms.

Will CR4 readers from other parts of the globe please join in this expression of support for readers in the affected area and their families, by adding messages below?

Many thanks.

Indeed, lets hope things get back to an even keel quickly and that those who have lost those close to them are supported through their grief.

Yes, and from a Yank, totally unaffected by it all, good luck to you who went through it.

Not so fast. The wind and rain may be gone, but the cold front from Canada is going to bring bitter cold temperatures to the 6+million elecrtic customers without power. More misery is still to come. Prayers are needed.

May God Bless and console those affected by this storm. Mother nature is totally awesome and beyond comprehension at times. (and at times, totally destructive)

Mother nature never fails to simply humble and amaze the human race in it's infinite power.

May all of the individuals affected by this tragic event join together in support of each other, regardless of race, religion, or political affiliation to help one another rebuild from this "Storm of the Century" type event. Those effected will come through it, battled and bruised, but better for the experience.

May God show mercy on those whose lives were taken by these tragic events. While we would all like to think that we are in total control of our lives, events such as these only show that the Master has a reason, life is his to take or give.

In situations such as this, as Americans, we have always shown our unique ability to bond together in times of crisis, not only when it happens on our shores, but where ever it happens throughout the world. And that, my friends, is why I believe in that we are "Blessed by American Exeptionalism", regardless of what some politicians beliefs are.

America calls herself the greatest country on Earth. What a perfect opportunity for those of us not affected by the storm, to prove it.

How many of us are willing to offer not only our prayers, but material aid, to help rebuild without expectation of reward? To take families into our homes? Freezing temperatures are approaching for six million people without heat.

It's times like these that a country proves it is truly great - or not. Greatness isn't a matter of saying so, but of doing so. Let's put feet to those words!

Nice to know people care. We were lucky in the fact we only lost power for 21 hours. Some lost lives and many lost homes. The cold weather and Northeaster coming this Wednesday is not going to help either. New York, New Jersey and the surrounding communities are all working together to get back to normal. We had up to 4 families living with us at one time or another and those still without power or heat come over for showers warmth and any thing we can offer. Getting gas for generators is also a problem. They started rationing our gas so everyone in need gets their share to stay warm. There is gas, but no power to pump it. It's amazing what people in your neighborhood can do if they pull together. Hopefully power will be restored to those who still have homes before any more lives are lost. Thankfully power companies from all over the country have been pouring in to repair lines, transformers and substations. We will get back to normal. And as a last note: maybe this means the end to that crappy T.V. show "The Jesey Shore".

It seems that every storm that comes this way teaches ALL of us new things.

Before Andrew, wood fences only needed posts every 8 feet. Now every 4 Ft.

Post Andrew windows and doors are required to have half a hardware store holding them in.

After Wilma, new gas stations were required to have generator power.

After Katrina, Publix Supermarkets purchased generators to run the entire store, at each store. ( After Katrina we also learned that thieves will bring a stolen lawn mower next to your generator, and steel your generator. You hear the lawn mower running, so do not suspect the theft.)

After Katrina, I learned that a generator is great, but 1 or two inverters and some spare automotive batteries will work well and are a lot quieter at night. I also learned that propane gas stoves can do a lot of cooking if managed.

Good luck on the recovery, and keep a pad of things that are damaged, or worse. In a month, you will forget half of the things that you through out as damaged.

Good luck.

And thanks to Mother Nature, she dropped 6 to 13 inches of snow on us last night as a friendly gesture.
