HELP: Building Chua and other chaotic oscillators

05/21/2007 4:56 PM

Hi All

I am teaching a senior level undergrad/1st year grad course is complexity, chaos and fractals and want to demonstrate some realworld examples of complex systems to the students. One of the 1st examples one thinks of is a Chua oscillator. However, I am not an electrical engineer (I am a mathematical physicist) and - while I have found circuit examples - finding the nonlinear resistor/varistor has been problematic to say the least. Is there anyone out there who knows where I could get an oscillator kit to build a chaotic oscillator or who has plans and parts locations to build such an item? This would be a great great help to me.

Thanks

Tarynn..

Hello, why are varistors hard to find. Both NTC and PTC types are easily sourced.

Im not familiar with the chaos theory and the chaotic oscillator. but I dont think to find the nonlinear resistance is a problem.

many negtive resistance devices can construct an oscillator, like neon bulb, tunnel diode etc. very most semiconductor which works at near zero point can be a good nonlinear device( or nonlinear resistance).

almost all electronic oscillators actived by itself experience a procedure which is very like chaos procedure, only the procedure is very fast and then come into normal oscillate.

I think you hope to prolong this procedure to show student.?

I recommend:

1. Google Chua Oscillator

2. Review "From Calculus to Chaos" by D. Acheson,

Oxford, 1997. Good Book at Junior/Senior undergrad level.

As EdBear said googleing Chua oscillator yields:-

As the first hit.

Also google "3 magnet pendulum"

Thank you all. The problem for me is that I am not an electrical engineer and finding circuits and parts that I understand and can put together with my not electical engineers is the kicker. I appreciate all the help. I will look into all of your suggestions.

Hi

I went and looked there but could not find exactly what what you were talking about once I was there? Help... remember, I am not an EE so you have to hand hold me through some of this.

Thanks

The trouble with all these modern commercial white and pink noise sources is that they almost certainly all rely on a digital pseudo random pattern generator (LFSR: Linear Feedback Shift Register). So..... not really what you want.

Thanks Randall ... not what I needed though. The Chua/nonlinear oscillator circuit is what I really wanted. But hey, it's a start!

Hello Tarynn google this Chua oscillator there is a site first on the list that will give you a very simple solution.

Google Google Google first in line on front page simple circuit. Uses really simple components and will be quick to construct. Easy Easy. all is explained.

Two simple non-linear, non-ohmic, resistive elements come to mind. First, a simple incandescent bulb offers a nonlinear, temperature dependent response. Second, most semiconductor devices such as a diode, zener, photo-voltaic cell, Shockley diode have a fixed voltage drop when forward biased and a breakdown or avalanche point when reverse biased. This also is a non-linear, non-ohmic response.

I would suggest you construct your oscillator circuit and leave an open socket for the non-linear element. Then try every thing in the junk drawer until you find something that works.

Tunnel (Esaki) diodes have a negative resistance region and are common.

Try here: http://www.americanmicrosemi.com/tutorials/tunneldiode.htm

I would like the students to build the oscillator and then be able to hook it to either an oscilloscope to see the patterns or to an audio device to listen to the patterns. The idea is to give the students a real world experience in systems that are nonlinear and have chaotic properties. Does that help?
