AC Stepper Motor

10/31/2012 10:03 PM

I'm building an X-Y table and came across a good deal on a couple Berger-Lahr high torque stepper motors. The problem is the name plate has a voltage rating of 100 VAC. I'd never heard of an AC stepper motor before. I've tried to track down the motor data sheet or any other information on AC stepper motors but had little luck.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks

A nice introduction to the variety of stepping motors can be found here. The Berger-Lahr motors I've used are nominally five phase motors. The whole step increment size of this type of a motor is smaller than other stepping motors. IMHO the advancement in micro-stepping drivers has made this smaller step size a negligible attribute. For more than you ever wanted to know about stepping motors go here.

In AC stepper motor, u have to check actual current flowing and desired, in case of any discrepency, or using CT-PT find current in 100:1 or 10:1 turn ratio, or u check earth faults i.e. leakage ( insulation failure) by meggar , if something u find then talk to expert about how sequnce 1000,0100,0010,0001 in case of 4-pole stator is followed or not??......

Thanks for the Links Redfred. Here's some more information:

The units are 4 wire with a winding resistance of ~0.8 Ohm. From the outside it looks like an ordinary Bi-polar stepper. My only concern is that there is something else I'm missing.

As the links show, you need driver circuitry to operate your stepping motor. There are many drivers available out there. The critical factor as others have mentioned is the current capability of your driver and not the voltage. The dominant effect the voltage applied to the driver circuitry will be how quickly your motor can achieve each step. This is a tricky attribute to measure, quantify and more to my point rarely really matters.

What you are probably missing in your understanding of stepping motors is that the software controlling the motion will have to be in-situ tweaked for optimal performance. The acceleration rate, running velocity, step/micro-step selection, running and idle currents will be adjusted to assure that steps are not lost, that operations move quickly, that motors don't overheat and that power is not wasted.

Interesting thread with some good stepper infos, though the main question, unless I slept through it, has not been answered as far as I can tell - "What is an AC stepper motor?"...

I expect I could find the answer on the web, but I thought I would give this blog a try first.....let us see how it progresses....

Just my 2¢ worth, but it may be a good deal purchase wise, but will it be worth it in the long run? Even if they are free they may be more trouble than they're worth... You will need drivers, power supply, ect.
