MAWP Limited by Nozzle Reinforcement

11/08/2012 2:42 AM

I designed a pressure Vessel in PVElite and I got this waarning in my report that my MAWP is limited by the Nozzle Reinforcement Pad. I have tried to increase the pad thickness, vessel thickness and nthey all seem to have no effect.

Plz I need suggestions on wat to do.

Thanks alot.

Need ur answers really fast.

Thanks all once again

This isn't the first time we have heard of odd results when using PVElite. If they have a help line, that should be the best place to ask. (Well, it should be, but it may not actually be.)

You must be working under a deadline. I just love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.

Do your own homework.

You do not have to do anything unless a Specification (customer or local) requires that "THE MAWP SHALL NOT BE LIMITED BY A NOZZLE" as ASME code Section VIII, Division 1 does not. It sounds like the additional thickness you are adding to the re-pad is outside the limit. Otherwise, did you try to maximize the re-pad OD ? How about using Long Weld Necks (expensive) ? How about inserting a thicker shell section at the nozzle ?

Are you familiar with ASME Section VIII? It's good practice to read that before designing a vessel to it. I'm guessing that you've used the maximum reinforcing area and are still limited by that nozzle. I can direct you to which section but I think it would be best to read most (if not all) of the UG section in there.
