Cost Comparison of Conveyors

11/14/2012 10:43 AM

I am looking to cut the total budget of a project, and evaluating if it is advisable to put screw conveyors in some places where we currently specify belt conveyors.

For the same distance and hourly capcity, which one is cheaper? Screw or belt?

I assume a drag conveyor is more expensive than the other two.

What have the suppliers you have spoken with said about relative cost?

What does your purchasing department say about cost?

What does engineering have to say about the relative merits of conveyors in your specific application, which you have not seen fit to divulge to the people you have asked to help. Namely, the forum.

Nothing here to go on!!

Do you have a dart board?

Purchasing department wants to cut 1 million USD from the 4,800,000 USD of the total budget.

Engineering prefers belt conveyors whenever possible to keep energy and maintenance costs low.

Suppliers asked for some time to prepare the budget.

The material to be handled is soybean flour, at 200 MT/hour.

What is the length of travel? If you are moving 200 metric tons of soybean flour, and you have to move this from Points A, B C, D, E F, to the ship that is 4 miles, (5KM's) away, use the belt conveyor. More efficient, much less maintenance than a screw plus no chance or I should say. Reduced chance of expolsion. You also did not specify if this was a class 1 div 1 or 2 issue. I know Flour is class 1 Div1 after expolsions where I am involved. I don't know about soy flour.

I am looking at screw conveyors only for short distances. Let's say, less than 30 meters. Most of the conveyors are outdoors, and those don't need to be explosion-proof.

I would have reservations about using screw conveyors due to metal contamination. (Unless they have a large OD and were slow moving). All arguments point towards belt conveyors.

I have to agree with Lyn,

What product?

Maintenance,

I'm sure even if you google you can get some drawbacks as when as benefits and weight the the two.

My guess is you're the project manager, you may not even work for the company directly, but talk to the maintenancen staff and look at the long term effects and costs.

Very Interesting task. I am working on similar areas right now.

Do look at the combination of Capital Costs and Operating Costs. There is a way to put them together so that you may do an optimization wrt the combination of the two. In this way, you look at the overall cost over the lifespan of the unit and not just the Capital Costs on their own. Of course, a quick comparison of capex only will give a general indication. Sometimes a unit has other losses such as damage or loss to the product, stoppages, maintenance, specialized operation, etc.

Do contact me if you wish. I am currently working on similar things. Do leave a message at my User name if you wish : BJInvention

regards Derek
