SS Pressure Vessel

11/15/2012 2:59 AM

Good day.

I am designing an air receiver using SS304. Do i need to add a corrosion allowance for SS vessels?

It depends upon the process fluid(s), its/their temperature(s) and pressure(s).

Most air receivers are constructed in lower-grade steels. Why 304 for this one?

Why does this client want a 304 one instead of a carbon steel one? What is so special about this air? What is different about the piping system? - is it 304 too?

What was the outcome of the initial discussion with the Engineer/Surveyor from the company providing burst indemnity insurance cover on the equipment?

Joe:

- Most air receivers are of carbon steel construction and meet ASME VIII or its equivalent. Stainless is an acceptable ( but expensive) alternate.

- All air receivers collect condensate which slowly corrodes the bottom of the carbon steel receiver. This corrosion problem is most often addressed by periodic blowdown of the receiver. This can be done via a tank drain manually, on a timed valve or via a sensor for liquid level.

- I would use a 20mm corrosion allowance for a SS receiver

20 mm does seem a little generous....

I'm even thinking 0.2 mm, but there may be some minimum standard thicker than that.
