Uniformly Spraying Hot Water Into a Tank and With No Cold Spots

11/17/2012 1:22 AM

Hot water (80 deg C) has to be pumped in to an upright cylindrical tank with dia 3m and height of fill (about 4 m). The water has to reach all the points without any cold points. Please suggest suitable configurations (heat loss to be minimum)

Insulate all your hot water carrying pipes to accomplish minimum heat loss.

Run it through a sprinkler head.

What configurations do you propose? You are at the scene. You have seen the tank.

Have you given this any thought? It would be nice to know what you have ruled out, so far. You have thought about this, right?

What have you come up with???????

Back to you!

Initially for a tank (smaller in dia. about 400 mm), a normal shower head was used. Rate of water flow being limited (about 80 t0 100 lpm) extrapolating it on to a large dia tank I faced problems related to uniform distribution and pressure drop. While using multiple shower heads, there is difficulty in not having enough water and when only one head is used spreading is not uniform.

A sprinkler like system is what I propose but doubt the efficiency. Also want to use a system of pipes (with holes drilled) either in a rectangular/square matrix form or circular (more like a fountain, pouring water down).

Want to reduce trail and error.

Calls for some experiments. Lay two headers to cover your circular area on the ground, with each header fitted with multiple hole nozzles. First see the area coverage of a single nozzle. Depending on the area covered, you can determine the number of nozzles that you will need. Ready-made brass nozzles are available off the self with data on their coverage/discharge rate. Water spraying/fogging is extensively used in coal handling industry for pollution control.
