Minimum Distance to Be Left Between Welded Joints in Pressure Vessels

11/19/2012 3:01 AM

Hi guys ,

in one the pressure vessels under fabrication ( 2 meter dia ) , the blank sheet used by the fabricator ( 6000 mm ) Was not enough to be rolled one time and obtain the required circumference (2265 ) so he has to make two weld as shown in sketch , in ASME SEC VIII DIV.1 UW-9 APP.D it says that the distance between 2 longitudinal welds should be 5 times the plate thickness , but some fabricators confirmed that such a distance might cause problems during welding so they push the limit to 300 mm at least ( 500 mm in some oil and refinery companies here in GULF )

now the clear question , what is the ideal distance to be left ? kindly support your answer from the code if possible , has the code been amended regarding this matter ?

regards

Neither CR4 nor its readers can offer burst indemnity insurance cover for pressure vessels, so this question must be addressed to the Engineer/Surveyor from the company providing burst indemnity insurance cover for the facility. That individual will need to know the materials-of-construction of the vessel and all internals, the wetting fluid and a whole heap of other information that has been omitted from this post.

Maybe the best way would be to arrange for that individual to attend the facility where all the information may be found and open discussions on the topic, perhaps?

Please mention them to the Engineer/Surveyor for the company providing burst indemnity insurance for the facility when that individual calls in.

Do you have to submit the vessel for inspection? If the answer is yes, then IMHO the inspection authority's ruling shall prevail.
