Tis the Season

11/20/2012 3:03 PM

The time is coming to spend time with family, come together and give thanks for the things we have for Thanksgiving.. unless you live anywhere in world outside of the USA, which a lot of you do in which case, you should spend time with your family / be thankful regardless.

Whether you celebrate Thanksgiving and/or any other holiday, one thing is for certain:

Electronics are soon to become dirt cheap.

With that said! I'm a little curious as to whether anyone here has any special purchases in mind ready for biggest consumerism day (Black Friday, November 23rd). I'll be personally hunting down a Wacom tablet (as per my previous thread here) and buying more computer core components (as well as gifts for family members yadda yadda yadda).

So, anyone have any special upgrades / purchases that they're prepared to jump on?

Glad you spared a thought for the rest of the world there (I was ready to come in guns blazin' ).

Since no-one's replied yet - and I've waited about 2½ hours - your thread looks like an excellent candidate for a hi-jack .

I would love the Thanksgiving Fairy to pieces if it could come and sort out my little problem; to whit:

I have a laptop running XP pro 32 bit, with lots of old and not-so-old software installed, but the machine's in the early stages of going home. So I went out and got me a fancy new one, with Win7 pro ( or whatever the up-market version is called) 64 bit. Nice machine - plays solitaire nearly as fast as me . But unless I can get two particular bits of software running on it - that's about how much use it is to me.

The softwares in question (Rockwell RSLogix500 and Cadence OrCAD 16) are both USB dongle-protected (Aladdin HASP types). Neither seems to want to run under Win7, so I first downloaded the Windows virtual machine thingy and got XP up'n'running. It saw the dongles, but refused to connect to them. So (on someone else's advice) I downloaded VMware player, and installed another copy of XP. Again, it saw the dongles, but refused to connect to them - in fact it sees USB memory sticks, but refuses even to connect to them .

Any nice fairies out there wanna give me a Thanksgiving/early Christmas prezzy, and tell me how to fix it? Pretty please?

Found this:

"First off, none of the OrCAD tools actually need or use a 64-bit OS. Secondly, the OrCAD tools are not tested or supported on 64 bit Windows, that doesn't mean that they won't work though!

One issue that you may have is, if running a local license manager and the license is locked to a USB dongle, you will need to download and install the 64-bit dongle drivers from the Aladdin site, look for the HASP 4 drivers. (Only the 32-bit version of the USB dongle drivers are on the media, the later installer at the Aladdin site has both and will install the correct driver)

Also, if you are running CIS, you need to get to the 32-bit version of the ODBC Admin tool, the 64 bit Control Panel link runs the 64-bit version which, pretty much, only supports SQL Server as an ODBC data source. I think this is in the SYSWOW64 directory but check the Microsoft site for ODBC, Access and Vista 64, again, I think it's odbccad32.exe you need."

Thanks pete - haven't had a chance to play yet, but will feedback when I do.

It'd be a start if I could just get the VM to access a USB stick!

I would like someone to publish descriptions in English, not techspeak, of these expensive gadgets. What it is that they do, what is its use, and how do you get them to do it.

If they used plain English, it wouldn't cost enough.

Dongle, indeed.

Dongle is kind of a conventional term for the little usb plug-in for wireless mice / keyboards / networking tools / etc.

I always thought it was kind of a silly term and thought that my buddy was pulling my leg when I first heard it in conversation.

Maybe from 'dangling' off whatever gadget, and somebody had been playing Donkey Kong ? Seems to be an unknown. Bluetooth is from Harold, of that name. There must be plenty of other computer related terms of the ilk.

Dongle is a tad silly, but what else could it be called ? Answers on a postcard, but not to me !

I'd like a CR4 UK spellchecker, or a plain old grammaticator (with auto-apostrophe function) for a present.

Well, that's kind of a negative look on it.

Leave it to a cowardly troll to spoil an elf's fun.

AP's like to shoot rockets from the strip and don't care where they land...as long as they cause damage.

Happy Thanksgiving!
