Barriers

11/25/2012 10:51 PM

There is a query by my client if Fieldbus barriers (used in the field) have the same function as IS barriers. FYI, the device type used is Exnl (residing in Zone-2) and there is a discussion about the need to go for an FF barrier in the field. In a previous project having similar configuration (Exnl & FF protocol), there were no barriers used in the field. But since it is still under commissioning stage, cannot consider it as a reference.

Any suggestions?

PS: I am an amateur in this field....

Selecting, installing and using hazardous area electrical equipment cannot be done safely without some training. So stop. Either:

  1. hand the job over to someone that knows what to do, or
  2. wait until a proper training course has been tackled and completed.
  3. There is no third option.

PWSlack, the project has not even started and is still under discussion stage, so the question of selection, installation or usage does not come here. I have 3-4 years of experience in Fieldbus Foundation in the hardware used in cabinets and HMI but not in the field.

This query has nothing to do with me working on it since it is only for information.

If the project will use Foundation Fieldbus then the barriers are a must.

Also if you are using barriers you can use less expensive sealing mechanisms.

Finally if you are an amatuer, please consult professionals, since they are the only ones who will know all the applicable codes, standards and equipment to use, here we are trying to give answers where the supplied information is generally less than complete, so any and all answers have to be confirmed.

Will Fieldbus replace LAN type BUS connections?
