Disconnector with Earth Switch

12/04/2012 2:31 AM

Disconnector with Earth switch in this sentence I know something about Disconnector and what the EARTH stands for?

In usual practice we are not simply calling Disconnector instead of calling as Disconnector with earth switch?

A disconnector is another name for a switch. Earth is the reference potential of the bulk of the planet. Is there anything more to say?

After disconnecting from the power source, you connect it to earth for safe-working. Instead of two separate devices they incorporate both functions in one frame.

I remember using a VCB (off load isolator) with an earth switch. The VCB was placed upstream of our Distribution transformers (2 MVA as far as I can recollect) and was without any protection. The earth switch would operate when the breaker would be drawn out (for maintainance may be). It would connect the power poles of the breaker with system earth. The main intention was to keep the working personnel safe in the event someone else would switch on the upstream breaker while maintainance is going on. The earth switch would simply divert the incoming current to the system earth.

In some facilities may also find people connecting everytime individual Conductor assembly from the breaker ploes to the system earth. It would look something like this:-

It could be used in outgoing circuits in substations feeding overhead/cables where it is part of an interlocked isolator. When you want to do maintenance on power line, switch it off by CB,isolate and earth and carry out the maintenance work.
