Analog Signal Voltage Levels

12/07/2012 11:10 AM

I have a number of analog devices with different voltage range requirements:

  • Ultrasonic sensors with 0-10 V output
  • PLC with 0-5 V analog inputs and 0-5 V analog outputs
  • DC motor controller with 0-2.5 V analog input

How can I scale these output signals to the correct levels required by the inputting devices.

For the 0-10V in you can put two resistors in series create a voltage divider.

You could do the same with the controller output depending on the input impedence, but I would just scale the output appropriately.

Actually the combination you have appears to be a very straight forward process.

First allow me to list my assumptions:

  • The ultrasonic sensor will be connected to a PLC analog input.
  • The PLC analog output will be connected to the DC motor controller input.
  • All of the inputs will have an input impedance of 10k ohms or greater. (RL)
  • The PLC output will have an output impedance of 100 ohms or less. (RS)

So with these assumptions you can connect between these devices with the same voltage divider of two 1k resistors for R1 & R2.

(Image acquired from here.)

Now if you do not know the output or input impedance of any of your components from their specification data sheets then a few simple tests can determine this.

let me guess, you spent more than 2 minutes developing your response? job well done

Thank's, your assumptions are correct. The circuit is obvious now that I see it

A non-inverting op amp circuit will allow you to scale the output voltage as you like without loading the sensor device. Here is a link:
