Generator Question

12/07/2012 6:18 PM

Hello everyone, I need help regarding generator. Is the AVR can cause the generator winding to burn out? My generator is 200 kva , 440 volts and got burned, I'am thinking whether the AVR can possibly cause with that. thanks a lot.

While you're having it repaired get them to check the control system.

Would have thought it unlikely. The AVR should be fused in case of shorts it should not be able to deliver enough current to burn out the windings.

Your problem could be many other things, overloading, faulty windings, bad connections causing shorts, overheating, dirt and moisture induced in to the windings.

  • Are you discussing stator or rotor windings?
  • What is the load?
  • Is the generator In parallel with others or with the main supply?
  • Does the generator have reverse current protection?

Well, the usual cause for things burning out is too much current, Mildred. Has someone replaced one of the fuses with a 3in nail?

Inside the alternator have other thing that have relation to AVR, I'm suggesting you to double check with:

a) Surge Suppressor.

b) Rotating Diode.

Check the resistance value or maybe your surge suppressor terminal have contamination.
