Lift Strut Repair

12/17/2012 7:13 AM

A few years ago I purchased a lift strut repair kit for a worn out strut on my truck canopy. It was a bolt-on collar(to the piston shaft) with a plastic rod attatched. It had a spring that kept it against the shaft. You cut it to length so that it held open the stut. I need another.(different truck cap) I've searched the internet(google etc) with no luck. Aftermarket auto stores give me a blank stare. Anyone remember these and where to get one? Thanks

Tried there. they have replacement stuts but not the repair item I'm looking for. I'm tight for $$$ and the stuts are more than I have in the budget right now. When I bought the repair Item I described is was under $5.00.

You may consider visiting your local auto salvage yard to find something close. You may have to reconfigure the mounting brackets if you can't find the same strut, but it would be minimal cost.

Cut a piece of PVC pipe to length and then slit it lengthwise so that it fits over the shaft. Leave it in the truck bed or, attach it with chain/cable to the canopy.

Just a thought

I work for Advance Auto Parts. We have these in my store. You might also look for them at our on-line store.

Thank you all for your assistance. I was using a piece of plastic pipe but the cap is tall and my wife is short, thus the need for a semi-automatic repair. I did find one like I had in the past last night in an old repair shop on my way home. Wife is happy so I can be happy now.

What you need is a gas strut or prop also gas spring, Take the measurements collapsed and extended also the mounting system. You may find them on line in ebay or kijiji and craigs list. They come in various ratings and depending on the weight of the door about 40 lb will do most applications. Always install with the reservoir down to keep the oil on the seal.. Good ones last a very long time as the quality has improved a great deal.
