They do different jobs, as anyone who has looked at their article pages in Wikipedia will know already.

An inverter is the opposite of a converter, UPS delivers packages.

You can interrupt an inverter, but not a UPS.

Never mind the teasing. An inverter converts a generic DC input, such as from an alternator in a motor vehicle, to an AC voltage (typically set to some standard line voltage and frequency). A UPS has a dedicated battery attached to an inverter, and typically also includes a battery charger powered by the primary AC line. Most UPS units also do line conditioning and regulation by routing power directly from the battery charging circuit to the inverter during normal operation from the primary line, thereby simplifying the switchover circuitry.

Inverter is only a device doing the opposite function of a rectifier but UPS is a storage device consisting a rectifier, battery and inverter.

The function of inverter is to convert DC to AC and hence the inverter is used when the DC system is required to be converted to AC system. In the UPS, the AC is first converted to DC and then the DC is again converted back to AC. The three major components of the UPS system are battery charger, battery and inverter. Therefore, when inverter is used in context of UPS, it is one of the major components of UPS system.

However, Inverter can also be used as standalone equipment for converting DC to AC or integral part of other equipment such VFD.
