Ex d Protection

Can Ex d equipment be installed in Zone 2? I believe it can only be installed in Zone 1. If so can some one please provide a reference to a clause in an IEC standard?

Ex d equipment designed for Zone 1 can indeed be installed in Zone 2 which is a safer environment than Zone 1. Yes it is commonly not marked to indicate such which can lead to confusion.

As for where it is in the standard, it is a little vague but try Annex G of IEC 60079-1 Equipment protection by flameproof enclosures 'd'.

Think of it like an IP rating, IP66 offers a better liquid ingress protection than IP65 so an IP66 box can be used in an application calling for an IP65 box.

Alternatively you can contact the equipment supplier for more information or written documentation if the customer requests it (although the site inspector should know all this).

What <...cost impact...>? If it is suitable for zone 1 then it is suitable for zone 2 with zero additional cost.

What is the cost of not using it? Explosions? Loss of life? <rhetorical questions - NNTR>

Hi,

I think he means you don't need to buy a Rolls Royce to do the shopping when a Mini will do.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,

John

IEC 60079 gives all.

Please stop and attend a suitable training course before carrying out any further hazardous area electrical design, construction, alteration or testing work.

yeah as we move from zone2 to zone0, the cost of equipment increases & vice versa..

Some equipment suitable for zone 2 cannot be installed in zone 1 and some equipment suitable for zone 1 cannot be installed in zone 0, then there are installations suitable for zone 0 that can be created in zones 1 and 2 as well.

The assertion of increased cost with reducing zone number label is nonsense.

PWSlack are u really confirmed it is nonsense?

Think for a while if zone 2 equipment can't be used in zone1 or zone 0 & zone 0 equipment can be used in zone 1 & zone 2 then what is the factor of consideration.

surely it is the increased protection for zone 0 & lesser for zone2.

for more protection you will have to bear more cost........
