PCB Sterilization

12/21/2012 4:24 AM

Hi! I am developping some pcb that will be deposed inside an incubator strictly in contact with living cells. My aim is to sterilizie these pcb : the material is fr4 and ,being an analogic device, is composed by resistance, capacities , operational amplifiers, connectors and gold pins. I find out

http://www.eetimes.com/design/medical-design/4217655/Sterilization-methods-and-impact-on-electronics-in-medical-devices-

that the best method for sterilize is Chlorine Dioxide (CD) Gas Sterilization.

What's your opinion ? Can it damage pcb ?

THX

Wouldn't it also kill off those living cells in the incubator with which the pcb was in contact?

but first I sterilize pcb and then, after a period that CD volatilize, I'll put PCB inside incubator with growing cells

Wouldn't sterilisation kill off all the cells?

Looks like Chlorine Dioxide is your best choice.

Chlorine Dioxide is a disinfectant. It is likely to affect living cells.

I do not understand the need for your PCB to be inside the sterile space as your growth chamber. I would use a bake-able vacuum grade connector through the incubator wall and mount the PCB outside of the sterile chamber. Now sterilizing the chamber can be done by virtually any method.

You thinking wrong about the problem. Do it clean, and CLEAN it big time. Then encapsulate it, and go thru the whole cleaning rigamarole, again.

THEN, you have an inert blob, clean, doing what you desire.

I did not invent it. Pacemeakers, and satellites both make use of the techniques. Basics agree, detail procedures may differ.
