12/21/2012 7:53 AM

If only see the case, how to identify it?

Blow some smoke on it. If it alarms, it's a smoke detector.

If not, it's a heat detector.

Alternately, bring some heat source (without smoke) close to it, if the alarms goes, it is a heat detector.

If not, it is a smoke detector. (My apologies, lyn.)

Should be labeled somewhere on case. Should throw CO detectors in there too, they all look alike

Like the others have said, remove the device from the socket by rotating it counterclockwise.

This will put the control panel in a trouble state but will do no harm otherwise.

If you can't tell what it is, post the model number here and we will identify it.

Smoke will normally only activate a photoelectric type detector, not an ionization type (contrary to popular belief, and what you might read on the internet).

Ionization detectors respond to the ionized particles of combustion which can occur in the incipient stages, even before you can smell a fire.

Without proper equipment, test this type of detector by blowing ash from a lit cigarette toward the device.

If it's the one waaaay up high that you can't reach and it goes off every single damn time you cook anything in the kitchen, then it's a smoke detector.

Boy that brings back memories...

With Ex-Mrs. Doorman #2, when the smoke alarm started singing supper was almost ready.

Her motto was "Timer? I don' need no steenkin timer!"

Our little house in Minn. is like that. You have to disable it to cook.

Boy, glad I'm not there now! Snow everywhere and 15°F

With Ex-Mrs. Doorman #2, the issue was neither the sensitivy of the smokies nor the size of the kitchen. There was a belief that maximum flame cooked stuff faster, thus better. The food passed right thru cooked while on the way to being burnt (her customary and standard technique), thus tripping the smokie.

15° F? Whew, it's warm over there, eh?

Gasoline here was down to $3.00 per US gallon for a while. Jumped up about a dime in the last few days.

Smoke detectors have louvers for smoke to enter and activate the sensor/detector. Remember there are different kinds of heat(fixed temperature/rate of rise) and smoke(ionisation/photo electric) detectors

Ever known a cook that uses one of those rather than an egg timer?
