Career Advice

12/26/2012 12:00 AM

Hello good people out there,

I'm a mechanical project engineer working in residential and commercial M.E.P contracting services for 6 years, i thought of doing Masters and i was a bit lost between MBA or sustainable kind of master degree, but was not sure what field would i work in to if i did a sustainable degree, and what exactly the work force demanded special at north america i.e - Canada) and U.A.E , I'm more self pulled in to sustainability , did my L.E.E.D and Estidama her at U.A.E and currently working on my P.M.P, but still wanted to know what and where would i be with a sustainability degree rather than an application engineer or sales at an international product company which i am not interested to do, a bit of a general question, but i would appreciate to hear your opinions , by the way i am not obliged to continue my career in contracting services, cause what it looks to me is if you don't own your contracting company, your sustainability degree is not of a major attraction to a lot of contractors and if it dose its still not the good future cash i guess, , , so opened to any new perspective.

Thanks

I'd contact some local employment agencies and talk to them.

We know nothing of your true skills, nor educuation, so it's difficult to give advice.

Forget the MBA.

been there done that.....very interesting, learnt a lot of hairy fairy/touchy feally/politically correct/administrative bollocks that was totally mostly inapplicable in the real world.

Google "Glogal Economic Crisis" to find out more about who your possible fellow alumni will be if you choose that direction.

PMP with a sound personal portfolio of real achievements is my recommendation......I wish PMP was an available option when I was choosing ongoing studies. However, PMP could become the new MBA.....I've met some PMPs....sad really.

Have you considered just being really good at what you are doing now instead of chasing the recognition of some faceless clique?

Estidama is becoming very required in Abu Dhabi and will become a law very soon in Abu Dhabi. My recommendation is for Sustainable / Renewable kind of Master degree. But you need to think after the Master Degree, is it going to be your PhD or just the MSc.

The main issue is what you really want, then go for it. Good luck

What should I do?...

I don't know, what should you do?

An impossible to answer correctly, by correctly, I mean to your satisfaction giving you a way forward. The question is very 'open ended', with many answers that would be based on experiences of those answering.

The only person that can give you really good, sound & solid advice on which path to take, is you!

Research your interest, apply for jobs and when in the interview, you interview them. Many people forget that an interview is a two way street.

I was offered a job with a international electrical engineering/manufacturing company and during the interview, one of the answers to my MANY questions wasn't what I expected nor did I like their reply. They offered my the job, there and then.. but I refused. but stated my objections.

So while you look for guidance as you start your life journey.... only you can decide. So I wish you all the best in whatever you decide.

Sustainability criteria is going to play the most influence in all future related technologies, services, products & technologies.

If you are already in job[ own or contract ] every day is worth, adding credit to your knowledge & experience.

Mere degrees won't fetch future, whereas how you apply the knowledge gained shrewdly may perhaps.

So you need not have to discontinue your job & go for MBA or P.G in sustainability. Both these degrees can be just got by mere home study by correspondence than going for a college.

There are even MBA degrees available on sustainability in mainly. open universities.

Hence, it is wiser to keep studying while working. Time and opportunities will make your contractor dreams come true, provided you master your business services in a cost effective & sustainable manner.

Then you become a competitive bidder of the contracts too.

Maybe a better question would be to ask "what do I want to accomplish in my lifetime?" The answer to that question will give you some guidance as to which avenue to pursue.

What you want to "accomplish" may have to do with lifestyle, money, time freedom, who you can help financially, professional goals, business ownership, etc. Once you have answered those questions go and talk with someone who has those kind of results and ask them questions as to what they did well or what they would do differently if they could redo some of the decisions of their lives. The best persons experience to learn from is someone else's, not our own. They have thought a particular way, made decisions in the past, acted upon them and then reaped the results of that thinking and action.

Other questions to ask: what do you like to do? What are you good at? What kind of conditions do you like to work in? What is your personality type (task or people oriented, outgoing or reserved, like details and crunching numbers or more hands-on)? What have you done in the past that brought you good results and satisfaction? What do other people you respect say you're good at?

Life is too short to do things you don't like or want to do!
