Rantings of an old FUD, Part 1

12/26/2012 4:43 PM

Back in the olden times, people had children so that they could teach them the skills and knowledge that they had acquired in their own life, and so, their children could carry forward and build on this knowledge for future generations.

Today we have children so that they can setup and configure our various electronic devices, and teach us how to use them.

Why are today's youngsters wasting their time with all this useless technology, when they should be applying their effort toward making this a better world for their grandparents to retire in?

I guess I am just feeling grumpy today. Maybe it's because I had to ask my grandson where I should load the key-punch cards to boot up the new lap-top computer that I got for Christmas. It seems that much of the technology that I learned as a youth is irrelevant today. After all, I am just an old tool & die maker.

Oh well. I am still able to apply the Fundamental Right-Hand Rule of Electricity That is: "Grasp the bulb in your right hand. Point your thumb into the socket. Insert the bulb and rotate it in the direction that your fingers are pointing" Yep! Still works every time, and I don't need a computer to do it.

We all stand on and take for granted the brilliant insights of the past. Let the next generation stand on your shoulders and make their own stupid mistakes. When they do stumble its OK to giggle, just don't point and laugh.

Don't worry when the solar flame comes along, snuffing out all digital devices, your analog knowledge will be in demand!

Don't fool yourself, analog will always be in demand at the input and the output stage.

By the name "FUD" I am alluding to someone whose world view is stuck in the past and has not a clue about what is happening in the world today

Back in the olden times, people had children for a labor force to farm or apprentice at what ever trade they were in. Teaching them was one way to get the most of their labor.

You're right old FUD, and it is good I think! ---- Back in the olden times too, the men (mostly) went a hunting with spears, knives, boomrangs ,bows&arrows and such-like.

Now the women (mostly) go hunting in the supermarket with a plastic card. A much better arrangement I think!, but what / where is it all leading to? Gerry. D.

While I do care where it all leads to, I'm here much more for the ride than the destination.

I don't know... I thought that in olden times people had children because of the lack of birth control (or understanding conception), or due to religion. Wanting help on the farm was another reason.

Today most people don't seem to want their children, or at least don't want to raise them. But I suspect that the old reasons (not understanding reproduction a.k.a. "oops", and religion) still apply.
